On April 1, 2025, the National Technical Committee for Standardization of Bionics (SAC/TC598, hereinafter referred to as the Standardization Committee) convened a drafting seminar for five national standards in Weihai, Shandong Province. The conference focused on deliberating core standards including Test methods for adhesion performance of bionic dry adhesive materials.
Hosted by the Weihai Bionics Research Institute of Jilin University, the seminar gathered more than 20 experts and scholars from prestigious universities, research institutes and enterprises nationwide, including Xiamen University, Jilin University and Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. As one of the drafting units for the national standard Test methods for adhesion performance of bionic dry adhesive materials (Project No.: 20241506-T-604), Nanjing Adhesion Technology Co., Ltd. jointly discussed the formulation details of the national standard alongside all participating specialists.

As a new type of surface and interface material inspired by biological adhesive structures and behaviors, bionic dry adhesive materials exhibit enormous application potential in aerospace, optoelectronics, semiconductors and other high-end fields. However, the long-term lack of unified performance testing standards at home and abroad has greatly restricted the industrialization of relevant technologies. Leveraging its in-depth technological accumulation and rich engineering practices in bionic adhesive materials, Nanjing Adhesion Technology Co., Ltd. has taken the lead in compiling the draft ofTest Methods for Adhesion Performance of Bionic Dry Adhesive Materials since January 2024, in collaboration with Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics and other institutions.
As the core drafting team, the company’s technical team has led the entire development process, including standard framework design, technical verification, revision and optimization. The first version of the standard draft was completed in November 2024. In April 2025, the team participated in the internal review organized by the national standardization committee. Together with participating experts, the team reviewed the full standard text, conducted in-depth discussions on its technical framework and detailed specifications, and put forward valuable suggestions for further improvement and optimization.
Nanjing Adhesion has long been committed to the R&D and industrialization of bionic adhesive materials. Its serialized products, including bionic adhesive pads, bionic friction pads, physical suction cups, APR plates and gecko adhesive tapes, have been successfully applied in China’s Mengtian Space Laboratory Module and multiple Shenzhou manned space missions. The products are also mass-supplied to leading enterprises in the optoelectronic, semiconductor and automation industries, effectively solving core technical difficulties in interface manipulation under extreme conditions such as vacuum, high and low temperatures, and vibration.
The nationally led standard systematically standardizes the testing methods for the normal adhesion strength, shear adhesion strength and peel strength of bionic dry adhesive materials, establishing a unified and standardized performance evaluation system for the industry. The formulation of this standard is grounded on practical experience from a series of national-level research projects undertaken by the company, including Research on Key Fabrication Technologies of Bionic Adhesive Structures Based on Ultra-large-scale Micro-perforated Metals, Research on Bionic Micro-transfer Printing Technology for Heterogeneous Integration of Photonic Devices, Research on Performance Degradation Mechanisms of Bionic Adhesive Materials under Space Irradiation Environments, and Research on Weightlessness Protection Technology and Mechanical Mechanism Based on Bionic Adhesive Fixation. Fully verified from multiple dimensions, the standard’s technical solutions feature outstanding scientific innovation and reliable engineering applicability.
The formulation of this standard not only establishes unified industrial technical specifications, but also marks a crucial step for China to enhance its international standard discourse power in the field of bionic materials. At present, there are no equivalent international standards, and existing domestic testing methods fail to adapt to the unique adhesive mechanisms of bionic dry adhesive materials. This standard delivers a standardized Chinese solution for the performance evaluation of bionic dry adhesive materials, supporting China’s strategic leap from technological follower to standard leader in the global bionic industry.
